Mollepata, Peru is the hole-in-the-wall town where my journey through the Andes began. It is a 3 hour, hair-raising ride, across mountain roads to high for cars and too small for buses. After a quick breakfast of toast and coca leaf tea, we were off.
Without any doubt, I can tell you this day was the hardest physical challenge I have ever experienced in my life. Having never hiked before, I found it unbearable to scale the very, very steep mountains with a lingering lung infection, 25 Kilos on my shoulders, the sun on my back, and little air to breath. After 9 hours of pure asswhooping, I was welcomed by a wet camp, hard noodles, and barely 5 hours of sleep. "What did I get myself into?", where my last thoughts before dozing off.
