WASHINGTON The White House on Thursday made fun of former President Clinton and his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, for criticizing President Bushs decision to erase the prison sentence of former aide I. Lewis Scooter Libby.
I dont know what Arkansan is for chutzpah, but this is a gigantic case of it, presidential spokesman Tony Snow said.

In his commutation decision, Bush left a $250,000 fine. Libby paid the fine on Thursday.
Libbys friends and supporters have raised more than $5 million to cover legal fees and were continuing to raise money but Libby paid the fine himself, according to someone close to the fund who spoke on condition of anonymity because details of the account are private. The cashiers check filed with the court was issued in Libbys name.
Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., has scheduled hearings Wednesday on Bushs commutation of Libbys 2 1/2-year sentence.
Well, fine, knock himself out, Snow said of Conyers. I mean, perfectly happy. And while hes at it, why doesnt he look at January 20th, 2001?
In the closing hours of his presidency, Clinton pardoned 140 people, including fugitive financier Marc Rich.
Conyers said the hearings would include pardons made by Clinton, former President Bush and possibly other past presidents. We wont need to review each and every one of them, but the whole idea is to examine to what use this part of our criminal law is being put and whether its being used adequately or are their other changes necessary, Conyers told Fox News Radio.
The former president tried to draw a distinction between the pardons he granted, and Bushs decision to commute Libbys 30-month sentence in the CIA leak case.
I think there are guidelines for what happens when somebody is convicted, Clinton told a radio interviewer Tuesday. Youve got to understand, this is consistent with their philosophy; they believe that they should be able to do what they want to do, and that the law is a minor obstacle.
Sen. Clinton, seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, said the Libby decision was clearly an effort to protect the White House. ... There isnt any doubt now, what we know is that Libby was carrying out the implicit or explicit wishes of the vice president, or maybe the president as well, in the further effort to stifle dissent.
Former Vice President Al Gore said he found the Bush decision disappointing and said he did not think it was comparable to Clintons pardons.
Its different, because in this case, the person involved is charged with activities that involved knowledge of what his superiors in the White House did, Gore said on NBCs Today show Thursday.
Scott Stanzel, a White House deputy press secretary, said that, When you think about the previous administration and the 11th-hour, fire-sale pardons ... its really startling that they have the gall to criticize what we believe is a very considered, a very deliberate approach to a very unique case.
Snow also tried to clear up confusion about Libbys probation. While commuting Libbys sentence in terms of prison time, Bush left in place his two years of supervised release. But supervised release a form of probation is only available to people who have served prison time. Without prison, its unclear what happens next.
Snow said the White House view was this: You treat it as if he has already served the 30 months, and probation kicks in. Obviously, the sentencing judge will figure out precisely how that works.
U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton, earlier this week, said the law does not appear to contemplate a situation in which a defendant may be placed under supervised release without first completing a term of incarceration.
He gave Libbys attorneys and Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald until Monday to respond.

O.K., one last time for all the idiots, especially bennyc80. Libby lied, he did not give up any "National Security information". And no, non of the comments today have anything to do with Clinton pardoning so and so with the exception to a response to someone that was making a specific point. If you can't pay attention long enough to know what Libby was convicted of and who is responsible for the leak of info then there is nothing to discuss. Obviously you haven't read a newspaper in quite some time. You couldn't even pay attention long enough to read the last post and the name Richard Armitage. If you are going to whine, at least get the facts straight.

This guy gave up National Security information--he should be inside Atlanta USP, Leavenworth, or maybe Florence---he gave up information regarding an undercover CIA operative---
I haven't had the chance to read all your comments but I'm sure they have something to do with, "Clinton pardoned so and so..."
Please Republicans tell me what individual did Clinton pardon that actually jeopardized National Security?

jkoriyama- This case has nothing to do with caring or not caring about America. It is and always has been part of a political game. All that information that was supposed to be gathered in Joe Wilsons trip was already known, that the deal for Uranium had not taken place which is why it was removed from the speech Bush made around that time. The fact that Valerie picked Joe to good on this "fact-finding" mission should be nearly as suspicious as the leak. When he returned and decided to write his article it was the trigger to a potential problem. The questions from the media and the statments by the media indicating that Libby didn't use her name in any discussions obviously wasn't satisfactory for everyone. The grand jury subpeona and heard testimony from Robert Novak so they obviously know something that has come out.
Here is what Novak has had to say recently:
Even before he began his long investigation, Fitzgerald was aware that the leak to me that started the case was made by then Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage. No proponent of the Iraq intervention, Armitage did not neatly fit left-wing conspiracy theory about Iraq policy. Consequently, he disappeared from the Internet blather about the CIA leak constituting treason. Armitage was not indicted because the statute prohibiting the disclosure of an intelligence agent's identity was not violated. But Fitzgerald plowed ahead with an inquiry that produced obstruction of justice and perjury charges against Libby though there was no underlying crime.
He also asks the questions that should be being asked:
Why did Deputy Atty. Gen. James Comey name Fitzgerald as special counsel when the identity of Armitage already was known at the Justice Department? Why did Fitzgerald pursue the investigation when he knew Armitage was the leaker and had determined no evidence of a crime committed? Why did Armitage, Secretary of State Colin Powell and the Justice Department fail to notify Bush about Armitage's culpability?
You want to rant on an on about a case where the special counsel knew that no crime was committed and are willing to call it anything but a political game? If this is your view then perhaps you are like the Capital Hill Dems in that everything is a conspiracy and if we can blame someone all the better. These are not as you say "distract and diversion tactics". These are the facts and they are the ones you don't want to face. Did Libby lie, Yes. Did it endanger anyone, No. He didn't get pardoned his prison snetence got commuted. He is still guilty, he still committed a felony and he still had to pay the fine and is likely to lose his law license. What part of this farce bothers you so much that you feel you have somehow been wronged as an American?
