  Tom Vendegna on keeping fit even while battling cancer

  Tom Vendegna could tell from across the radiologist's office that he had something devastating.

  As a doctor staring at the MRI exam, he knew the mass on his left thigh was cancer. He had seen similar scans hundreds of times before, but nothing could prepare him for being the patient.

  His mind went blank as doctors discussed treatment options and his wife, Gayle Cekada, also a doctor, cried in the corner. He felt violated, like someone had kicked him in the gut.

  "It was a very bad moment," said Vendegna, a San Luis Obispo physician who works as a lung and critical care specialist in the county. "Not hearing what everyone is saying around you but just thinking, ‘I'm going to die.' "
