A team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has demonstrated a revolutionary new technology called WiTricity, which transmits electrical currents wirelessly across a room, and could ultimately reduce reliance on cords and batteries for laptop and handheld device users.

“Imagine a future in which wireless power transfer is feasible: cell phones, household robots, MP3 players, laptop computers and other portable electronics capable of charging themselves without ever being plugged in, freeing us from that final, ubiquitous power wire,” said a statement released by MIT. “Some of these devices might not even need their bulky batteries to operate.”

Researchers demonstrated WiTricity by lighting a 60-watt light bulb from seven feet away, using two magnetic coils designed to resonate together and create a wireless current of power. The same concept could theoretically be used to charge laptops and other electronic devices over room-sized distances.

“As long as the laptop is in a room equipped with a source of such wireless power, it would charge automatically, without having to be plugged in,” commented Peter Fisher, MIT physics professor. “In fact, it would not even need a battery to operate inside of such a room.”

No word yet on when of if such a technology could be commercialized, but there is little doubt that its eventual release would change the way we use portable communication and entertainment devices.
