I have a Satellite Pro 430CDT laptop with a modem card. I have used this for a few years but now want to add another modem (in place of the present one) in order to get higher speed connections. Is such a modem available and, if so, does a cable exist to connect the 430CDT to the cable connection ?

I'm going to assume you mean a modem that connect a computer to the Internet or another computer over a phone line...

What connection speeds do you get now? How much faster do you expect to be able to connect with a dialup modem?

I ask because dialup modem technology has been pretty much static over the last five years or more. The modem in your laptop may be as fast as they get.

 How old is your laptop?

Your 430CDT has a serial port, so ANY external modem that uses a serial port will be compatable

Also, any 16bit PCMCIA modem card will also work in that machine

Yes I want to connect to the Internet via coaxial line on either comcast or charter 3MB speed

My laptop is about 8 years old. I don't want dialup

I would also need a cable to connect the laptop to the coaxial line

 Thank you

You need a LAN Network Interface adapter card - again 16bit, and the cable company will/should provide you with a cable modem that connects via RJ45 cable to the laptop NIC (network interface card)
